For biochemical studies, gefitinib is a selective epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor, an enzyme commonly expressed in solid tumors of epithelial origin. Gefitinib extensively inhibited the growth and angiogenesis of human tumor cells xenografted in nude mice. In vitro, it can increase the apoptosis of human tumor cell derived lines and inhibit the invasion and secretion of angiogenic factors. Gefitinib has been shown to enhance the antitumor activity of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy in animal studies and in vitro studies.
