Properties: White or off-white crystalline powder. This product is a white or off-white crystalline powder. Almost odorless. This product is slightly soluble in water or ethanol and insoluble in chloroform. It is readily soluble in sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide solutions.
Usage: Biochemical research. This product is an anti-gout drug.
Pharmacological action: This product is a drug that inhibits the synthesis of uric acid. Allopurinol and its metabolite oxypurinol can both inhibit xanthine oxidase, prevent hypoxanthine and xanthine from being metabolized into uric acid, thereby reducing the production of uric acid. It reduces the uric acid content in blood and urine to a level below solubility, prevents uric acid from forming crystals and depositing in joints and other tissues, and also helps to re-dissolve the uric acid crystals in the tissues of gout patients. Allopurinol also inhibits the synthesis of new purines in the body by acting on hypoxanthine-guanine phosphonuclease.
