Appearance: White or light yellow powder. Has wetting properties and is stable to chemicals, heat, and light. Odorless and tasteless. CMC is a polymer obtained by carboxymethylation of cellulose. Pure carboxymethyl cellulose has no practical value, and its sodium salt is actually used.
Purpose: Biochemical research. The maximum use is to prepare soap and synthetic detergents, adding approximately 1% CMC to heavy-duty cleaners to prevent washed out dirt from settling on fabrics.
